Vitamin C For The Skin: Is It Better To Eat It Or Apply It?

When it comes to vitamins, no one can deny that they are essential. But, in terms of skincare, is there a difference in effectiveness whether you take vitamins internally or topically? When it comes to a specific vitamin, vitamin C to be exact, the answer is a resounding ‘YES’.

Let’s break it down, shall we?

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C has some pretty awesome powers. Also known as L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is an antioxidant that has the power to neutralize free radicals. We all know that vitamin C is a great cold fighter (OJ anyone?) but it is also known to protect against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health issues, eye disease; and, of course, vitamin C helps with fighting those fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C and Your Skin

So, about those fine lines and wrinkles: vitamin C is a key ingredient when it comes to skincare. You probably have noticed an abundance of vitamin C in key moisturizers and serums. Because not only does vitamin C help smooth out your fine lines, it also helps even out your skin tone, boosts your collagen production (which firms your skin), brightens your skin and helps with your skin’s healing process.

How can we not love vitamin C, right?

Now for the million-dollar question: how does vitamin C fare when taken orally versus applying it topically?

Of course, studies have shown that having a healthy vitamin-rich diet is never a bad thing. Eating foods high in vitamin C will get you on a healthier track, but when it comes to collagen production, applying it topically to your skin is 20 times more effective!

With regard to your skincare routine, including products with vitamin C is proven to be an effective way to bring about the healthy visage that you deserve. Case closed? Yeah, I think so too.
