This recent pandemic has got us talking a lot lately about risk. In the words of Prof Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at Edinburgh University, “there will never be no risk”.

However we have always faced risks as we go about our daily business, eg driving a car, crossing a road etc. We readily accept these risks in order to live our lives but rarely think about them, we just get on with things. The important thing however, is how we MINIMISE these risks.

In the examples above, we drive with awareness of other traffic, we don’t speed, we look before we cross the road. In the case of Covid 19, we practice social distancing, we wash our hands frequently etc.

Aesthetic practice is no different. It carries risk just like everything else. At my Fresh Aesthetics clinics in Portadown and Newry, I always explain the risks of treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers fully to my patients, who sometimes seem surprised to hear them or sometimes don’t want to hear them!

However as a transparent, responsible medical professional, I explain all risks to you so you can make an INFORMED decision whether or not to have a treatment such as Botox, dermal fillers or Profhilo. It is not my intention to put you off, just to educate you. So just as you wouldn’t stop driving just because there’s a slim chance of having an accident, the slim chance of a complication is not enough to put most people off aesthetic treatments.

Remember, as with driving etc, the most important thing with aesthetic practice is how to MINIMISE any risks. This is why, when having treatments like Botox, fillers or Profhilo you are safest in the hands of an experienced, thoroughly trained healthcare professional who is fully trained in risk management.
